Nutrition knowledge update and practical tips for language professionals

Some of the most important crises humankind is facing today involve nutrition. It is widely acknowledged that human food production and consumption affect our own health and that of the planet. But do we, as language professionals, know enough to be able to work on this subject matter with confidence? This workshop aims to equip participants with knowledge, skills and resources to edit and translate documents on nutrition and related topics.

Facilitator: Carolina Rojido, MD MHA

Purpose: To equip language professionals with the knowledge necessary to confidently handle the increasing demand for language support in nutrition and related fields (healthcare, food production and environment).

Description: This workshop will provide an overview of key concepts in nutrition, focusing on terminology, regulatory aspects that affect translations, and practical applications for language professionals working with international clients. First, it will cover core knowledge in nutrition and environmental science, including basic nutrition concepts, the evolution of nutrition science, and the link between sustainable diets, human health and planetary health. This will be followed by sections on food labelling and regulations across countries, practical examples for language professionals on how to apply this new knowledge, and strategies for finding work in and around nutrition. Interactive discussions, group exercises and Q&A will be integrated throughout the workshop.

Participant profile: Editors, translators and writers who would like to expand into the area of nutrition will benefit from this workshop. Those who have some experience in this area may also find it useful.

Outcome: Participants will have a deeper knowledge of nutrition, an understanding of how different concepts connect, and practical skills to apply this knowledge when navigating policies and labelling. They will be familiar with the current terminology and aware of resources they can access to expand their grasp of the subject matter. They will be able to apply all this information in their day-to-day work.

Preparation: Participants will be asked to complete a short questionnaire to help the facilitator tailor the session to their individual needs. A pre-workshop document covering foundational aspects will be provided.
