Welcome speech

MET is honored to announce that Josep Vallverdú (Lleida, 1923), renowned Catalan narrator, playwright, poet, essayist, linguist, and translator, will open the conference by welcoming us to Poblet and talking about his experiences as a writer, translator, and educator. Mr. Vallverdú has translated more than 70 works, including those of Henry James, Graham Greene, Jack London, Martin Luther King, Oscar Wilde, and John Steinbeck. Along with other translators, he played an instrumental role in filling the publishing gap in Catalan culture. Mr. Vallverdú’s work has won many awards, including the prestigious Creu de Sant Jordi, one of the highest distinctions in Catalonia.
