Getting the most out of machine translation

Mary Savage, Vilfranca, Castellón, Spain

Although far from perfect, machine translation (MT) is another tool that we can add to our box of translation tricks. It can save you considerable time and lets you make more money without having to raise your fees. In the last couple of years I have been using it for some translations with varying degrees of success and this presentation will offer some insights based on my own experience. I will first look briefly at the ethics of MT, and then explore the MT options available, their advantages and disadvantages, and some of the pitfalls to be aware of in the crucial post-MT editing stage.
