Accessibility
MET cares about accessibility. We strive to be as accessible as possible, in line with our objectives. Below is an outline of our current efforts to promote accessibility, broken down into MET (association-specific) and METM (conference-specific) initiatives.
If you have any suggestions about how we can further improve MET’s accessibility efforts, please contact our membership chair.
MET
- Our monthly Council meetings are online to maximize accessibility.
- We hold only one in-person MET Council meeting per year to reduce the need for Council to travel.
- All images in MET newsletters and on social media have alt text.
- We aim to ensure that all our web pages are clear and concise.
- MET serves a social purpose as an accessible community within the language profession.
- We hold some workshops online to maximize accessibility for all members.
- We offer regular online MET Conversations for members.
- The MET Book Club is online.
METM
- METM is an itinerant conference designed to reach members across the Mediterranean, improving the quality of access.
- We aim for small to medium-sized cities to avoid big-city bustle and overwhelm for attendees.
- We choose venues in central locations with easy access via public and private transport.
- METMs are small-scale events (approximately 150 attendees).
- All attendees have name badges.
- Attendee lanyards are colour-coded to ensure people are easily identifiable: red for Council members, green for first-time attendees, blue for repeat attendees and yellow for the local conference team.
- The METM conference programme, workshops, presentation abstracts and off-METM programme are available as printable PDFs.
- Interactive and potentially noisy sessions are signalled with an asterisk on the programme.
- Attendees are provided with a quiet space on-site or at a nearby venue.
- There is a pinned conference map available on the website showing the conference venue and key off-METM locations.
- Venue facilities such as seating areas, toilets and disabled access are marked on a venue map available on the website.
- The registration desk is staffed throughout the conference.
- We welcome proposals on the topic of accessibility.
- Accessibility content features on the conference programme, for example, Clearly able: sensitive editing for texts on disability (METM25).
- METM presentations are made available to members after the event on the METM archive web page.
- Individual support is provided as appropriate and feasible to attendees to ensure METM content is accessible.
- We provide a comprehensive FAQ page to answer as many questions as possible ahead of the event.
- The METM FAQ page includes sections on accessibility (“How accessible will METM be?” and “How easy is it to get around?”).
- An opt-in attendee list with photos on the website helps attendees put names to faces before arriving at the event.
- We share updates for METM attendees online only via “My METM” (accessible via personal devices).
- “My METM” can be consulted at any time for a reminder of any workshop sign-ups, dietary specifications and other registration information.
- Travel and accommodation information features on the MET website well in advance (on the “Getting there”, “Getting around” and “Where to stay” pages) to allow time for adequate planning of accessible options.
- The “About” web page includes any salient information regarding venue accessibility (such as steps and lift access).
- A private METM LinkedIn group offers a space for attendees to share accessibility information.
- We aim to accommodate member requests for additional support as far as is feasible for our volunteer team and within our remit as a non-profit association.
- We provide a translated menu for the closing dinner in advance of the conference.
- We do our best to accommodate diverse dietary requirements.
- We aim to ensure food is clearly labelled at conference meals.
- We organize off-METM tables (sign-up required) to help attendees socialize and network with colleagues in an informal setting.
- Attendees can bring guests to some off-METM events (sign-up usually required).
