Privacy notice
At MET, we’re committed to protecting and respecting the privacy of our members and other professionals who visit our website and attend our events.
This privacy notice explains when and why we collect personal data, how we use them, the limited conditions under which we may disclose the data to others and how we keep data secure.
Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET) is an association of translators and editors who work mainly into or with English. Through MET, members exchange views and experiences on promising practices and keep up with relevant research, both online and at our events.
Our members share a belief in peer-generated continuing professional development, consistent with practice in the disciplines we come from and in the knowledge societies we serve.
We collect data to provide membership services, run our association and organize our events.
We use the personal data we hold in the following ways:
- To help members contact each other
- To organize conferences and workshops
- To enable members to advertise their services through our directory
- To help users of language services find providers through our directory
- To tell non-members about MET events though our newsletter
- To manage payment records, payment methods and invoices
We process personal data in order to provide membership services and organize events for registered participants. In both cases, processing constitutes the performance of a contract.
We also process data to fulfil our obligations with the tax authorities.
Last, almost all our data are collected through registration forms with an opt-in consent box.
We use service providers to help us manage our association and deliver services to members, event participants and newsletter recipients. To do this, they may have access to some of the data we hold. These service providers include:
- a database and website host
- a bank and an accountant
- newsletter, event and sign-up managers
- event helpers
All of these service providers are compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or are actively taking measures to become compliant, or in the case of US companies, are self-certified under the US Privacy Shield framework.
MET keeps personal data for the time necessary to perform the contract. This is mostly for up to two years after the event or one year after a member leaves MET. To learn more about specific storage retention times, please contact us by email (see bottom of this notice) and we will be happy to give you full details.
If we collect and store your data, you have the following rights under the GDPR:
The right to be informed
The aim of this privacy notice is to tell you how MET collects and uses personal data. We also inform you about specific data processing practices when you provide us with those data.
The right of access
You have the right to contact us at any time to request a copy of the data we hold about you. Members have ongoing access to, and are able to edit or delete, most of their personal data through their profile. They receive reminders at least twice a year to review and update their data (on joining or renewing their membership and in a mid-year email). They can also choose to make their profiles public or for members only.
The right to rectification and the right to erasure
We want to make sure that your personal data are accurate and up to date. You may ask us to correct or remove data you think are inaccurate. As a member, if you ask us to erase all your data, you will not be able to continue being a member.
The right to data portability
Since the services we provide are unique, we can only give you a list of the personal data we hold, so data portability as such does not apply.
The right to restrict processing and the right to object
You may ask us to restrict our processing of your data or object to such processing. Should you have any other concerns, please contact us. You may also lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in Spain or in the country where you live.
Rights in relation to automated decision making and profiling
MET does not use automated decision making or profiling.
MET stores and processes all of the personal data it holds in strict compliance with the provisions of the GDPR.
We encrypt the data you enter in our contact and registration forms with SSL technology.
Your personal data will be securely stored in our database and in electronic files.
We do not keep hard copies.
MET stores personal data in a database hosted within the EU. All MET data processors must use an up-to-date operating system, antivirus program and firewall.
MET helpers (MET members who assist with the running of the association and events) and MET council members all sign a confidentiality and security agreement.
Cookies are small data files created by a website and stored on your computer or mobile device. We use cookies to analyse user traffic and to keep you logged in while you browse MET’s website. We inform you that we use cookies when you visit our website for the first time.
We keep this privacy notice under regular review and update it here as required. This privacy notice was last updated in February 2019.
