MET digital clean-up day, 19 June 202631-07-2026After our first digital clean-up day in March, there were calls for regular decluttering sessions. Accordingly, a second clean-up day was held on Friday, 19 June. As in March, we met on Zoom in the morning to discuss our aims and introduce the Framacalc, the spreadsheet where we record our progress and comments. But this time, we stayed online for an hour of silent decluttering, giving participants the chance to ask questions or leave comments in the chat. We met for another hour at the end of the day for a debrief and feedback session. Our objectives included clearing out inboxes, photos, and outdated files and folders; devising systems for cloud storage and different file types; and checking GDPR compliance. In total, we deleted about 5000 emails and almost 60 GB – an average of 6 GB for each of the ten participants. And this is likely an underestimate, as one enthusiastic digital cleaner-upper even emptied an entire Hotmail account, wiping out 25 years of old emails! Attendance was down on the previous session, but two new people came, and feedback was positive and encouraging. Participants are now consciously saving less “stuff” online and are working on streamlining their storage processes. We all agreed that getting started was the most difficult step and that group decluttering offered a supportive environment to get going – and to share resources such as the PARA method or the file-search tool copernic.com. One declutterer pointed out that participating in digital clean-ups might even be a selling point for our social media accounts or websites. Join our LinkedIn group to find out more. And save the date for our next digital clean-up day: Monday, 21 September. |
