UB Language Services
The UB Language Services has provided quality language support to the University of Barcelona since 1988. Originally founded as the Catalan Language Service to promote and ensure the use of the Catalan language in academic settings, the unit has since expanded to offer multilingual services to the university community. In accordance with UB regulations (Statute, Regulations on Language Use and the Plan for Languages), Language Services is responsible for ensuring the linguistic quality of university texts, providing correction, translation and terminology services for institutional, teaching and research documents, and defining the UB style guide and language model. Its mission is to promote the Catalan language and quality multilingual communication among the entire university community (teaching and administrative staff and students). The unit also offers multilingual self-learning resources, as well as face-to-face and virtual Catalan and Aranese courses and Catalan and Aranese language accreditation.
The Language Services consists of a team of in-house linguists supported by interns and freelance professionals. They work both internally with UB institutions, in particular with the Faculty of Catalan Philology imparting the specialization diploma in Language Consultancy and Publication, the School of Modern Languages, and the Language Technology Service, as well as with inter-university initiatives through the Vives Network of Universities (XVU), the Catalan Interuniversity Commission for Language Training and Certification (CIFALC), the Catalan Society of Terminology (SCATERM), the Pan-Latin Terminology Network (REALITER) and the Ibero-American Terminology Network (RITerm). The unit also collaborates with other associations like APTIC.
