Building a specialization in architectural translation

Architects express their ideas through two- and three-dimensional representations that are understood the world over. Writing about architecture is a different story. Today, there is a significant role for writing as a strategic tool in winning new business and explaining how architecture addresses social, environmental, health and economic issues. In a globalized market, many architectural practices work internationally. They use English to market themselves and to talk to clients and contractors, policymakers and the public. This is where the translator comes in.

Facilitator: Terri White

Purpose: To provide an introduction to translating for architecture and construction, illustrating the breadth of subject areas covered, and to offer guidance on developing a specialism in a field where formal and semi-formal CPD options are limited.

Description: The workshop is divided into two parts. The first part will address the topic in general, covering client and text types, learning opportunities and resources, as well as possible pitfalls for those from a purely language background. The second part will focus on the analysis and translation of real texts; participants will work together in small groups and share their conclusions and finished creations.

Participant profile: All translators, irrespective of previous knowledge or experience in architecture, who are looking to find a new specialism or broaden their existing knowledge. Examples will be drawn from English, French and German depending on participants’ profiles.

Outcome: Participants will gain a general understanding of the types of work available in architecture and construction and learn how to go about building a specialization in a field where images are as important as words. They will leave with a clearer idea of the skills and knowledge required to work with architects and civil engineers.

Preparation: No specific preparation is required, though participants are encouraged to take a look at some or all of the articles and resources provided in advance.

About the facilitator: Terri White is a freelance translator with over 30 years’ experience and a love of the built environment. She worked at universities in France and Tunisia and in-house for a London translation agency before setting up her own translation business in 1990. She has developed her specialization in architecture through independent study, site visits, community projects and personal connections. Her translation work includes websites, video scripts, press releases as well as editorial, exhibition and academic texts.
