METM presentation

How to train your MT

John Di Rico, Nice, France

Machine translation (MT) has improved significantly in recent years and is moving into the mainstream for translators. Studies have shown that leveraging MT in your workflow can raise your productivity by up to 200% and increase your job satisfaction. You can already deploy several off-the-shelf statistical or neural MT solutions; however, did you know that you can train your own custom MT engine with client-specific translation memories and then integrate it into your CAT tool?

During this session, you will learn how to train a custom MT engine on the Microsoft Translator Hub and see an example of its deployment in a CAT tool. The French-to-English MT output from the off-the-shelf engine will be compared with that of the trained engine to highlight the benefits of training your own engine. By the end of this session, you will
  • be familiar with the online training portal and the steps to take to train a custom MT engine
  • understand what is meant by a BLEU score and the importance of using a scientific method to train your engine
  • recognize the potential benefits of adopting customized MT in your workflow
