Easy to work with: when flexibility turns into a liability

Martina Abagnale, Arnhem, Netherlands

Many language professionals pride themselves on being adaptable, responsive, and easy to work with. However, the very traits that help us build strong client relationships can quietly turn into exhaustion, frustration, and a lingering sense that we are never doing enough. When does “listening” become overextending? When does flexibility take us beyond our limits? And how do we recognize we’re at that tipping point before something breaks?

In this interactive session, we will explore how to take a more active and guiding role in professional relationships rather than simply responding to and accommodating every request. How do we handle situations in which clients expect a level of customization which is neither practical nor necessary, or make requests that conflict with our professional judgement? In small groups, attendees will discuss real-world scenarios, share experiences, and examine how their own expectations and those of their clients may differ when it comes to responsiveness, flexibility, and value. We will also discuss how language professionals can explain the reasoning behind their recommendations, set realistic expectations, and push back against requests when necessary without compromising professional boundaries and our wellbeing.

This session is open to language professionals at any career stage, particularly those navigating professional change, taking on new responsibilities, or looking for more sustainable ways to work. Attendees will leave with fresh perspectives, practical communication strategies, and ideas they can apply to their own professional relationships.
