By following a simple lifestyle in harmony with nature, the Cistercian Order was the medieval exponent of the modern concept of environmental awareness. In 2007, the monastic community at Poblet embarked on a long-term project of recycling and reusage, reduced water consumption, and the replacement of fossil fuels with solar and geothermal energy—the seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies into a medieval setting.
