Off-METM21 online programme
No METM would be complete without an off-METM social programme. At METM21 Online, our fringe line-up offers plenty of opportunities for learning and networking, all with a virtual twist. This year, there are no sign-ups for off-METM activities.

Lightning talks on MET activities
Pick the mix of MET projects that you want to hear more about in our medley of mini-presentations.
- Book club: lively literary conversations and silent reading sessions
- MET bookshelf: our itinerant library of members’ publications
- ReFAL project: school subtitling project (MET outreach)
- Small research grants: support for members’ proposals
- The Hive: our vibrant resource hub
- Tweet your thesis: an upcoming event with our sisters
- Volunteering for MET: none of this is possible without you
Join the relevant breakout group to hear about the project you're interested in. Each 15-minute talk will be repeated three times.
One text, two editors, endless talking points
Join us for a behind-the-scenes view of the editing process. Under the expert guidance of host Wendy Baldwin, two veteran authors’ editors, Alan Lounds and Theresa Truax-Gischler, will discuss how they’d help an author prepare a short article-length thesis for submission to an international journal, working directly on the text in question and showing us how they’d prompt the author to revisit the abstract and introduction. Find out more.

Pre-recorded musical performance and live prize draw
Ruth Simpson takes up the baton to lead the METM21 choir’s interpretation of Hey Jude by the Beatles. You can even sing along – mics muted, please!
Feeling lucky? The traditional METM raffle will follow the choir’s performance. Dana Szabados, our sponsorship coordinator, will announce the winners.
Cosy cove-side chats about your castaway essentials
A METM spin on the age-old radio show: pick your top tunes, books and luxuries as you flit from cove to cove in small random groups of castaways. No sign-up required; bring your own coconut, deckchair and knotted handkerchief.
Virtual mixer for all METM attendees
Round off METM21 Online in style at our after-party. We'll meet on Wonder to unwind, catch up with colleagues old and new, and toast the end of our conference. All welcome, castaways and landlubbers alike.
